About Holy Land
Holy Land is a series of photographs made in Jerusalem and the Galilee. It moves between the stone lanes of Jerusalem's Old City and the open landscape around the Sea of Galilee, following places that have drawn pilgrims for two thousand years and the everyday life that goes on around them.
In Jerusalem, a weathered stone cross stands on a parapet above the Old City rooftops under heavy cloud; a cat crouches beneath a butcher's table in a vaulted alley at night; ancient olive trees fill the Garden of Gethsemane below a church dome; coils of razor wire top an old stone wall in the Christian Quarter. A long concrete wall covered in graffiti, ending in a watchtower, sits among them.
Further north the pictures open out: men resting with a hookah in a field at the edge of a pine forest, a dirt path through pines and spring grass, a candelabra cactus between agaves on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and basalt boulders along the lake under rain clouds. The series sets the sacred and the ordinary side by side: stone, wire, water and trees within a few hours of each other.
